Adv Gaum served as a Deputy Minister of Education of the Republic of South Africa from 5 November 2008 until 10 May 2009. He was also a member of Parliament of the Republic of South Africa from 1999 until 2001 and re-appointed in 2004. He was a member of African National Congress (ANC).

 

Academic Qualifications

Adv Andre Hurtley Gaum holds an LLB and LLM and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law from Stellenbosch University. He was admitted as Attorney of the High Court of the Republic of South Africa in 1995; and as an Advocate of the High Court of the Republic of South Africa in 1995.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

He worked as a State Prosecutor in 1992; and worked in the Office of the State Attorney from 1992 until 1995; and as a Legal Advisor from 1995 until 1999. He also served as Stellenbosch Municipal Councilor from 1995 until 1999 and became a member of Parliament of Republic of South Africa from 1999 until 2001.

During his time as a member of Parliament Adv Gaum was a member of the Portfolio Committee for Education from 1999 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2008; member of the Joint Constitutional Review Committee from 1999 to 2000 and from 2005 to 2008 and member of Portfolio Commiittee on Safety and Security from 2000 to 2001.

He served as a member of Western Cape Provincial Parliament from 2000 until 2004 and as MEC for Education in the Western Cape Provincial Government from 2001 until 2004.
